Simplifying Connectivity and Reducing Risk with IP Media Trust Boundaries

In the dynamic landscape of media networks, the increasingly rapid shift towards an IP-first philosophy has brought about many operational efficiencies and cost reductions. The simplicity of routing management and flexibility to adapt to configuration changes has enabled media networks to be increasingly agile.

However, the evolution towards IP connectivity has unveiled new challenges and risks not present with classical co-axial video interfaces and network switching.

Addressing IP Connectivity Challenges

In building out IP media networks, the capability to connect any device to any other device, anywhere in the world – whether they are compatible or not, introduces concerns about network stability and operational practices.

Operations teams for IP media domains may look to creating processes that guard against the risks that adding new services may trigger. For example, mistakenly over-rating the network or introducing a new service with excessive jitter that could disrupt the core network and multiple services.

Network managers may consider checks need introducing to ensure that only media centric data-streams enter the network or correct interfacing is made when moving content between media domains or ensure content is routed within valid IP address ranges.

Net Insight’s Advanced Trust Boundary

In answer to the challenges and freedoms that are intrinsic to IP media networks, guidelines on new best practice to address these issues have been defined in a recent guideline SMPTE RP 2129.

Net Insight goes beyond industry guidelines, integrating an advanced Media Trust Boundary into the core of every Nimbra media network node. This innovative solution empowers system architects and network operations teams to implement rules-based and automated functionality, creating air-gaps between media networks tailored to individual needs that keep each and every media flow separated. By leveraging a powerful hardware architecture, Net Insight’s implementation has the ability to apply Trust Boundary processing to every stream – from very low data-rate audio streams up to multiple services passing across 100Gbit interfacing.

Net Insight’s Trust Boundary is designed to act as a network demarcation point that replicates media RTP streams through from an untrusted or external network into a trusted network that an operations team can own, understand and safely manage.

Core Elements of Net Insight’s Trust Boundary

  1. Monitoring:
    • Real-time monitoring of media data passing through the boundary.
Checks key quality of service metrics with the ability to alarm and provide in-depth network health analysis.
  2. Protection:
    • Ensures error-free media streams by implementing FEC, seamless switching, and ARQ techniques.
    • Polices individual streams to prevent overload of the trusted network.
Only allows approved media flows to pass through the boundary.
  3. Adaptation:
    • Simplifies interfacing between different networks with features like port mapping, network address translation, and unicast to multicast translation.
    • Implements flow replication for the efficient distribution of media streams to multiple takers.

Empowering Operations Teams

With the ability to monitor, protect, and adapt media RTP traffic, operations teams gain unprecedented control and manageability over media networks. Net Insight’s Trust Boundary facilitates the creation of actively managed sub-networks within organizations, allowing for dynamic and responsive operations across national and international domains.

Boosting Confidence and Efficiency

The effect of implementing Net Insight’s Trust Boundary is the creation of a clear demarcation point that instils confidence in operations teams when connecting IP domains. By separating networks, media flows become more actively controlled, enabling increased agility. Net Insight’s Trust Boundaries provide the means to confidently manage and partition media networks, reducing risks and fostering a more secure operational environment that creates the opportunity to increase operational efficiency.

Unlocking Opportunities for Media Businesses

Utilizing Net Insight’s Trust Boundary can enable organizations to exchange content with other media businesses with reduced risk, to launch services faster, and create more cost-effective solutions. By creating mini domains within large network infrastructures, media companies can enhance service provisioning, making their offerings more accessible and attractive in the competitive media marketplace.

Trusted by various global customers across industries

“We can now consider a far wider array of live broadcasting services, often presented at very short notice, for our overseas territories where difficult connectivity environments had, until now, hindered numerous high-quality broadcast opportunities. Net Insight’s solution reduces our operational costs significantly, while at the same time enabling us to maximize our service availability and reach to our overseas territories.”

Pascal Gerard,
French overseas territories, at France Télévisions

“We offered our IP/MPLS media transport solution to the world’s most demanding TV companies, for their contribution feeds and it has performed extremely well. Going forward, we see multiple possibilities to expand our service offering based on the advanced VA platform. In addition, the strong QoS functionalities combined with the advanced monitoring capabilities of the Net Insight Nimbra platform ensures that we can offer the highest quality services to our customers.”

Magdalena Domagalik,
Business Development Manager Media Services, KPN

“For us, carrier grade really means something, and we would never use the Globecast brand on a solution if we didn’t believe it fulfilled our strict quality requirements.”

Benoit Leonble,
Product Manager, International Terrestrial  Solutions at Globecast
