What are the Key Features that Differentiate RIST from Other Streaming Protocols?

By David Edwards, Product Manager

In the ever-evolving landscape of media streaming, ensuring reliable and secure content delivery is paramount. Reliable Internet Stream Transport (RIST) stands out as a premier protocol designed to address these needs. It offers unique features that distinguish it from other streaming protocols, making it a preferred choice for broadcasters and content providers.

Low Latency and High Quality

RIST excels in delivering low latency and high-quality streams, crucial for live broadcasts and real-time video applications. Its ability to efficiently handle packet loss and jitter ensures that video and audio streams remain smooth and uninterrupted, maintaining the quality necessary for professional media transport.

Robust Error Correction

One of the defining features of RIST is its robust error correction mechanisms. Utilizing Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ), RIST effectively manages packet loss, significantly enhancing the reliability of streams over unstable networks. This adaptability ensures seamless recovery from network disruptions, providing a stable viewing experience.

Advanced Security Features

Security is a critical concern for streaming high-value content. RIST incorporates Datagram Transport Layer Security (DTLS) and Pre-Shared Key (PSK) encryption to safeguard video streams from unauthorized access and tampering. DTLS, widely used in secure web transactions, ensures that only authorized viewers can access the content, protecting it from potential threats.

Point-to-Multipoint and Multicast Support

RIST facilitates efficient point-to-multipoint and IP multicast streaming, allowing broadcasters to deliver content to multiple destinations using the same network resources. This capability is particularly useful for large-scale broadcasts, reducing bandwidth requirements and improving overall efficiency.

Interoperability and Open Standards

Built on open standards, RIST promotes interoperability with various technologies and vendor products. This open specification allows for seamless integration into existing workflows without being confined to proprietary systems. This flexibility is particularly beneficial for broadcasters seeking cost-effective and versatile solutions.

Support for Multiple ISPs and Redundant Links

RIST supports the use of multiple ISPs and redundant links, enhancing reliability through techniques like hitless switching and bonding. This capability ensures continuous streaming even if one network path fails, maintaining high availability and minimizing disruptions. This feature is critical for broadcasters who need consistent and reliable content delivery.

Tunneling and Bidirectional Capabilities

The RIST Main Profile includes native tunneling capabilities, enabling the transmission of multiple streams in any direction within a single RIST-protected IP tunnel. This supports not only audio and video but also any IP-based protocol, making it ideal for applications like remote camera control and bidirectional communication.

Bandwidth Efficiency

RIST optimizes bandwidth usage through techniques like null packet deletion and retransmission bandwidth throttling. These features ensure that streams remain efficient even under limited bandwidth conditions, reducing overall costs and maintaining high-quality service. This makes RIST an excellent choice for broadcasters looking to maximize their bandwidth efficiency.

The unique features of RIST, such as low latency, robust error correction, advanced security, and interoperability, make it a standout protocol for modern streaming applications. Its support for multiple ISPs, redundancy, and efficient bandwidth usage sets it apart from other streaming protocols.

Trusted by various global customers across industries

“We can now consider a far wider array of live broadcasting services, often presented at very short notice, for our overseas territories where difficult connectivity environments had, until now, hindered numerous high-quality broadcast opportunities. Net Insight’s solution reduces our operational costs significantly, while at the same time enabling us to maximize our service availability and reach to our overseas territories.”

Pascal Gerard,
French overseas territories, at France Télévisions

“We offered our IP/MPLS media transport solution to the world’s most demanding TV companies, for their contribution feeds and it has performed extremely well. Going forward, we see multiple possibilities to expand our service offering based on the advanced VA platform. In addition, the strong QoS functionalities combined with the advanced monitoring capabilities of the Net Insight Nimbra platform ensures that we can offer the highest quality services to our customers.”

Magdalena Domagalik,
Business Development Manager Media Services, KPN

“For us, carrier grade really means something, and we would never use the Globecast brand on a solution if we didn’t believe it fulfilled our strict quality requirements.”

Benoit Leonble,
Product Manager, International Terrestrial  Solutions at Globecast
