About DMC Production and Matchday Production

DMC Production is a leading live sports production company focused on remote production, primarily serving the Nordic market. With operations in Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark, DMC Production has established a robust network across these regions, offering high-quality production services for various sports events.

The company’s expertise lies in centralized remote production, leveraging cutting-edge technology to deliver seamless and efficient broadcast solutions.

Matchday Production is a joint venture between DMC Production and Denmark’s No. 1 sports league, Superligaen. This collaboration aims to transform sports production in Denmark by implementing advanced centralized remote production techniques and Video Assistant Referee (VAR) systems.

Matchday Production focuses on delivering highquality football and ice hockey broadcasts, ensuring a superior viewing experience for fans and meeting the demands of modern broadcast platforms.

The Challenge

The primary challenge faced by DMC Production and Matchday Production was to modernize the broadcast infrastructure for Denmark’s top sports leagues, including the Superligaen and Metalligaen Danish Ice Hockey. This modernization required addressing several key issues:

01. High production volume
The need to produce 193 productions and VAR sessions for the Superligaen annually over six years (2024-2029) while managing up to 800 matches per year across various leagues.

02. Simultaneous matches
Handling up to six simultaneous matches per league, necessitating a robust and scalable production setup.

03. Remote production
Transitioning to remote production using JPEG XS and SDI to ST2110 studios, with the introduction of TR-08 in 2025, to streamline operations and reduce on-site resources.

04. Network connectivity
Ensuring reliable fiber connectivity across 60 arenas, provided by TDC, with dual 100Gb connectivity to DMC Nordic production centers in Copenhagen and dual 10Gb in Oslo.

05. Broadcast distribution
Coordinating with TV distribution rights holders TV2 Denmark and Viaplay, both long-time users of Net Insight’s Nimbra platform, to ensure seamless delivery of broadcast content.

06. Technological advancements
Adapting to the rapidly evolving broadcast landscape, with new players like tech giants entering the market, necessitating high content quality and advanced technology platforms.

”Matchday Production A/S entered this collaboration with Superligaen with the clear ambition to deliver a high-quality product to all Danish football fans”

Mats Berggren, COO DMC/Matchday

The solution

To address these challenges, DMC Production and Matchday Production implemented a comprehensive solution involving state-of-the-art technology and strategic partnerships. Key elements of the solution included:

01. Centralized remote production
Establishing a centralized remote production model, reducing the need for extensive on-site equipment and personnel. This model leverages the Nimbra platform for reliable and efficient content delivery.

02. Advanced production vehicles
Deploying three classes of production vehicles (large, medium, and small) equipped to handle productions of varying sizes. These vehicles ensure flexibility and scalability in managing different production requirements.

  • Large Production Vehicles: 16-ton trucks with 12 system cameras, 1 block camera, 2 InGoal cameras, 1 CameraRF Link, and 1 drone
  • Medium Production Vehicles: 7.5-ton trucks with 8 system cameras
  • Small Production Vehicles: 3.5-ton vans with 2 system cameras and 2 special wireless cameras

03. Fiber connectivity
Utilizing TDC’s fiber network to connect 60 arenas with dual 100Gb connectivity to the DMC Nordic production centers. This setup ensures high-speed and reliable data transfer for seamless remote production. Trucks connect with 10Gb.

04. Broadcast center infrastructure
The broadcast center, equipped with four linear production rooms, four audio rooms, five production desks, six VAR desks, and 40 CCU panels, supports a centralized production model that enhances operational efficiency. Oslo, with similar infrastructure, serves as a backup during peak times, allowing both production and VAR operations to be managed from Oslo or remotely from Denmark. This setup ensures flexibility, resilience, and consistent high-quality broadcasts, even during high-demand periods.

05. VAR implementation
Implementing a centralized VAR system for the Superligaen, covering 193 games annually. This system ensures accurate and consistent officiating, enhancing the overall quality of the broadcasts.

06. AI-driven production
Utilizing AI-driven production for the 2nd and 3rd divisions, covering 192 games each. This approach leverages automation to manage lower-tier games efficiently while maintaining high production standards.

07. Strategic partnerships
Collaborating with TV2 Denmark and Viaplay, both experienced users of the Nimbra platform, to ensure seamless content distribution and leverage their extensive broadcast expertise.

“Net Insight’s Nimbra platform deliver the reliability and trust required, as we have seen from many of our previous reference cases in Remote Production.

It was actually the case that we were concerned about the reliability of alternative solutions for this project.”

Trond Hermansen
Group CTO, DMC Production

The Results

The implementation of this comprehensive solution yields significant positive outcomes for DMC Production, Matchday Production, and the Danish sports leagues:

Enhanced production quality
The centralized remote production model and advanced technology platforms ensured highquality broadcasts, meeting the expectations of modern viewers and new broadcast players.

Operational efficiency
The centralized approach and scalable production vehicles streamlined operations, reducing the need for extensive on-site resources and minimizing logistical challenges.

Increased flexibility
The three classes of production vehicles provided the flexibility to manage productions of varying sizes, ensuring efficient resource allocation and cost management.

Reliable connectivity
The dual 100Gb central, 10Gb truck fiber connectivity and the Nimbra platform ensured reliable and high-speed data transfer, supporting seamless remote production and content distribution. Nimbra, with its integrated inter entity Trust Boundary, enables simplified management with highest reliability at full transmission speed, keeping integrity and end-to-end monitoring for each transport stream.

Consistency in decision-making
The centralized VAR system improved the accuracy and consistency of decisions in the Superliga, enhancing the credibility and fairness of the league.

Sustainability
The remote production model contributed to a greener approach in football production, reducing the carbon footprint associated with extensive on-site operations.

Revenue and quality control
The joint venture model allowed DMC Production and Matchday Production to secure long-term revenue and quality control, creating a product attractive to new broadcast players and increasing the overall value of the leagues.

Summary

The collaboration between DMC Production, Matchday Production and Net Insight has successfully transformed the broadcast landscape for Danish sports leagues. By leveraging advanced technology, strategic partnerships, and a centralized remote production model, they have set a new standard for sports production in Denmark.

Demonstrating the potential of innovative approaches in addressing complex production challenges and delivering superior viewing experiences for sports fans.

The journey of DMC Production and Matchday Production in Denmark serves as a blueprint for other sports leagues and production companies aiming to modernize their operations and adapt to the evolving broadcast landscape.
