Cloud Networking

Moving media transport to the cloud

OVERVIEW

What is Cloud-Based Networking?

Cloud-based networking is a modern approach to network management, utilizing cloud computing to deliver networking services. This model transitions from traditional, physical networking to a more flexible, scalable, and cloud-based structure. It allows organizations to manage network resources and services via the cloud, enhancing agility, reducing costs, and improving efficiency. Cloud networking solutions can integrate with various cloud environments and support diverse applications, ensuring robust security and reliable connectivity.

It represents a strategic shift in network management, essential for businesses in today’s digital landscape to transport media over IP.

TODAY’S LANDSCAPE

The Future of Cloud Networking

Cloud networking is becoming increasingly more common, where broadcasters and content owners are moving more of their operations into public and private clouds. Distribution and contribution using the internet is a core strategy of media organizations worldwide, and now, production in the cloud is now following suit.

Media processing is part of the suite of core services for live production that can be hosted in the cloud today. This includes format conversion, multi-viewing, and video switching, with graphics and playout also ready for the cloud and available as-a-service. The network support for moving to the cloud include virtual routers, bandwidth management, protection mechanisms, firewalls, and network management software and is needed to create a seamless experience when managing live content to and from the cloud.

We’re now at a point where entire live production workflows are possible in the cloud, but challenges remain. Media organizations are moving at different paces, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to cloud networking technology. Partnering with an expert in broadcast-grade cloud computing networks can help teams navigate this journey.

There is no technological reason why a full live production pipeline cannot be built entirely on cloud-based networking.

BENEFITS

The Benefits of Cloud Based Networking

Cost-Effective

Cloud networking enables media organizations to avoid substantial fixed capital investment in physical facilities, instead optimizing compute and storage resources in the cloud. This approach allows for more control over operational spending, as services are rented only when needed.

Reduced Complexity

The shift to cloud-based networking reduces the complexities of in-house equipment integration while significantly enhancing the ability to add and refresh new services.

High Adaptability

Broadcasters and media service providers are increasingly drawn to cloud networking for its flexibility and speed. With cloud-based networking, it’s possible to dynamically adjust capacity and resources to meet demand, offering a level of adaptability that traditional systems can’t match.

Better Forecasting

Transitioning from a custom on-premises environment to an open-source, cloud-based networking environment transforms operational experiences. The predictable behavior of cloud networking technology enables broadcasters to accurately forecast the costs associated with operating, expanding, or launching new services.

Flexibility and Speed

Adopting a microservices approach within cloud networking solutions allows broadcasters to upgrade equipment and introduce new features more rapidly, economically, and flexibly than ever before.

Sustainable

Combining cloud networking with remote production is crucial for sustainability, significantly reducing power, energy, and transportation costs.

CASE STUDY

The Switch – Underpinning and powering network growth

Background

To be able to meet the ever increasing demand on flexible production and distribution services, such as remote production, The Switch took on the challenge to expand its production network.
To solve the above challenge, The Switch launched its new on-demand cloud-based production called MIMiC. It utilizes Nimbra Edge power to transmit the on-demand cloud-based production.

The challenge

The Switch needed to be able to control the multi locational network units by a centralized platform.
They did not want to be dependent upon local support, and at the same time have the full view of metrics and configurations. Being one of the professional players in the industry, The Switch had the experience of preemptively foreseeing the higher demand for video qualities such as the range from 1080p to 4K UHD.
This was finalized when The Switch planned to perform a big upgrade of its core infrastructure.

The solution

The solution to the challenge was to combine the multi-faceted platform from Net Insight called Nimbra Edge which helped the Switch to launch its cloud-based global IP transmission product in the Summer of 2021. Utilizing the above solution, The Switch enabled the Sport event broadcasters, as well as other streaming providers to deliver their media to different locations around the world via the internet, cloud as well as its own private network.

The result

In the post-Covid aftermath, the delivery of higher capacity connectivity using fiber and cloud solutions has been a perfect solution for live events and other production and broadcasting situations. The need for cloud-based hybrid managed infrastructure confirms the “Swiss Army Knife” usage of Nimbra Edge.
The higher demand for the combination of cost and flexibility of the remote broadcasting is here to stay, and The Switch has been able to solve both of the above challenges utilizing the Nimbra Edge platform.

“We continue our solid relationship with Net Insight for the development of our network since we aim to be the standardbearer for QoS and reliability around the world.”
