OVERVIEW

Intelligent accurate time transfer – From anywhere to everywhere

Net Insight’s Precision TimeNet is GNSS/GPS independent and delivers PTP time services that meets the strict synchronization requirements for 5G TDD networks. The solution works over existing IP networks without requiring full timing support PTP in every intermediate node. The solution has been developed together with and for MNOs to provide an overlay time synchronization that is disaggregated from underlying network and works over any network including leased line capacity and microwave links.

Through an overlay service-oriented approach, accurate time is efficiently distributed out to base stations or the radio access network (RAN). Precision TimeNet enables an open and vendor agnostic network infrastructure. The solution provides high scalability and is resilient to both node, link and clock failures. It is interoperable with PTP and works seamlessly together with PTP and GNSS/GPS solutions. Precision TimeNet is extremely flexible and can be used in different network scenarios: As the main synchronization throughout the entire network, as a complement to existing GNSS/GPS or PTP implementations or as a backup/redundancy that can be scaled up to a complete solution at any time. This solution enables operators’ synchronization to grow and develop independently and disaggregated from the network transport, which allows for virtualization and cloud solutions.

CHALLENGES

Top 3 contribution priorities we support you with

Time synchronization is key to secure mission critical real-time services over IP

Reason: When power transmission networks are moving their real-time critical services to IP their time synchronization will be a critical factor. The usage of synchrophasors (PMUs) for better control and protection schemes will also greatly impact on these tightened requirements.

Heterogeneous network environments threatens service availability

Reason: Power networks consist of old network environments that need to embrace new technology to be future proof. This brings forth challenging heterogeneous networks that need to enable mission critical real-time services. Time synchronization needs to work seamless and independent of the underlying network and provide accurate time within real-time boundaries.

GNSS/GPS independence is key to assure secure service availability

Reason: As time synchronization requirements in mission critical power transmission networks are strict, GNSS/GPS solutions are not feasible due to vulnerability issues like jamming and spoofing. These network needs a secure and reliable in-network alternative that can assure service availability.

OUR SOLUTION

Precision TimeNet is designed to support mission critical services with secure and reliable time synchronization

Precision TimeNet synchronization is a solution designed to assure security, reliability and service availability and the innovative approach fundamentally changes how synchronization is performed in exsiting networks. The synchronization solution is open and completely disaggregated from the physical transport network, designed to be scalable and flexible to support cost-efficient rollouts and heterogeneous environments.

BENEFITS

Precision TimeNet – Key benefits

GNSS/GPS Independent

Solves the stronger phase synchronization requirements that TDD introduces in the 5G networks independently of GNSS/GPS. This increases security and reliability. Solves

Network agnostic

Handles any underlying network architecture including leased line, microwave links and DWDM networks.

Open solution

Open networking and open APIs prevents vendor lock-in and enables innovation. Lifecycle service orchestration (LSO) enables automation and orchestration of timing.

Disaggregated

Distributes absolute time from anywhere to everywhere in the network over existing IP/MPLS infrastructure independent of network capacity and layers. Disaggregating synchronization from the physical transport and from requiring hardware support in every network line card transforms and significantly simplifies synchronization in IP networks. By moving synchronization to a L2/L3 network function, it opens up for centralized intelligence allows for network and services to grow and develop independently of the synchronization architecture.

Extremely scalable

Precision TimeNet is based on guiding principles for the Internet and developed with an end-to-end approach, assuring seamless scalability and future innovation.
