Enabling delivery of live video to thousands of customers’ iOS, Android, web and Apple TV devices

About Stream Station

Stream Station builds and manages networks, streaming services and linear channels live and on- demand for customers including broadcasters, OTT providers and Fortune 500 enterprises. Its solutions include acquisition, contribution, distribution, pre- configuration and streaming services to provide resiliency, operational simplicity, and an economical offering. Stream Station helps serve around 6000+ events annually where many are tier one sports events.

“The ability to send video direct to devices is a game changer thanks to Nimbra Edge. We can now more easily change the features for different customers and our customers can easily alter the service they need on-the-fly, such as streaming different camera feeds. Nimbra Edge makes life a lot easier and gives our customers control.”

Chip Pettit, President of Stream Station

Beginning of the journey

With the continual and rapid rise in demand for live streaming video from just about every organization for everything from entertainment to communications to rapid alerts, Stream Station realized a gap in the market for a cost-effective managed service which allows low latency transport delivered to consumer devices that reside within enterprise organizations.

Chip Pettit, President of Stream Station, explains, “There is huge latent demand for real time video streaming for a whole variety of applications but the market is deterred by the cost and complexity of what is involved in building and running the infrastructure particularly when live streaming is not their core business. What we have done with Net Insight is solve a big missing piece which is to bring live video from source direct to any individual device at scale.”

Stream Station has deployed an IP contribution network powered by Net Insight’s Nimbra Edge in the cloud enabling them to offer a white label managed service for live streaming video at scale for clients including enterprise customers and first responders.

Remote operations are becoming embedded in the broadcast and live events sector too. An operations engineer using Stream Station Connect could view the monitor wall of a NOC while off site. A live event producer could switch the video feed sent to IMAG screens at a live event, via the app, and while remote from the venue.

Workflow and markets

The workflow enables a customer to simply plug in a video source from an event, from master control or Network Operations Center (NOC) and send that feed to the Stream Station cloud where it is managed by Net Insight Nimbra Edge for distribution to customer devices.

Stream Station has badged the app Stream Station Connect and will offer it as a managed service for clients in a number of markets. These could include first responders: police, fire & rescue and government agencies.

Explains Pettit, “In event of an emergency situation government  agencies  can  disseminate  information from source and send it directly to members of the public. A police officer involved in a pursuit by car can have real-time information, such as the live feed from a helicopter, sent to them. A firefighter team can watch the live feed of a conflagration in the cab while en route to the incident.”

Other use cases include in educational institutions where large universities want to send video from their main campus offsite for health and safety monitoring.

Enterprise customers can broadcast communications to their employee’s via individual devices and to Apple TVs in breakrooms. With digital communications so integral to hybrid home/office and on-the-go working environments, the ability to reach 100,000+ members of an organization at the same time is a capability that far outweighs any video conferencing app.

Remote operations are becoming embedded in the broadcast and live events sector too. An operations engineer using Stream Station Connect could view the monitor wall of a NOC while off site. A live event producer could switch the video feed sent to IMAG screens at a live event, via the app, and while remote from the venue.

Nimbra Edge software flexibility

Stream Station began work on the project a couple of years ago, writing the app for iOS, Android and Web plat- forms and have road tested it with a number of different video protocols. The app itself is secured with password and two factor identification.

“It is a mature app that has been constantly iterated and now allows integration using the Nimbra Edge software as well,” says Pettit.

“The advantage that Nimbra Edge gives us is the ability to scale while retaining video quality. It also gives opera- tors the freedom to control video from anywhere.”

With the Stream Station Connect app for iPhone already released and tvOS (for Apple TV) next to go live, Stream Station have already started adapting the app for Apple’s next-gen XR headset Vision Pro.

None of this flexibility was possible using current streaming protocols. With video transmission using Nimbra Edge, latency has reduced to sub-second. In addition, Stream Station has access to functionality it never had previously.
