The transition from analogue to digital media broadcast began in the mid-1990s and was prefaced by a shift within the broadcast production facility from analogue component video to Serial Digital Interface (SDI). The aim was to accommodate improved viewing qualities such as High Definition and to cut down on the cost of cabling. The fundamental processes of programme production and distribution did not change.

Similar forces are now at work across the media broadcast industry as satellite and cable is joined by internet protocol (IP) as a form of media transport. Internet distribution, which is also known as over the top (OTT), is on course to be the dominant form of media broadcast worldwide. At the same time, IP is replacing SDI within the facility and for the contribution of media to the production hub.

The need for greater agility to support ultra-high resolution video, better connectivity of infrastructure, and growing OTT demand is driving this evolution at pace. For the first time, the production and the distribution of broadcast programming will rely on the same underlying (IP-based) technology.

IP Transforms Media Transport

IP transforms media transport by converting signals into packets of data and routing them over the network. It replaces the point-to-point unidirectional link of SDI with the ability to send media as streams of video, audio, and metadata to anywhere with sufficient bandwidth and an IP endpoint. Any format and any combination of audio, video, and metadata can flow bidirectionally across a facility or between facilities and over long distances using the same protocols, the same switchers, the same common IT architectures.

Media transport over IP liberates the broadcast industry from reliance on expensive, inflexible, outmoded, and proprietary hardware solutions at every part of the chain. IP software and solutions allows for more dynamic production video workflows as well as lower total cost of ownership.

Rather than pushing work linearly from source to consumption, broadcasters can build systems to perform one function one day and a different or multiple functions the next. Systems can be scaled up, or down; best-of-breed tools and services can be interchanged; production can be distributed with talent operating from anywhere.

The challenge

In 2004, while fiber capacity was becoming more widely used, the EBU took on the challenge of complementing its satellite network with a terrestrial variant, to keep up with the ever-changing industry. The goal was to find the perfect combination for seamless transmission of live broadcast video over a new, secure, high-performance terrestrial network, together with EUROVISION’s existing worldwide satellite network.
