Production workflow agility and flexibility is driving the shift to IP technology and file-based content. The full potential of agile workflows can only be unlocked if service providers deliver on-demand capacity on request, putting the broadcaster in control of where and when they have connectivity.

As live broadcasting continues to develop, broadcasters and service providers need to change how they work. As more video is brought in externally, transmission capacity must be adaptable and changes must be allowed in real-time. This puts pressure on network service providers to deliver live video services on-demand for any content, anywhere, at any time.

So what’s our solution?

Our customer and application provisioned network solution is based on software defined networking (SDN) technology. It puts broadcasters and media producers in the drivers seat, allowing them to book and provision service provider network capacity where and when they need it. This can be done through a simple self-service portal, or automatically by applications through APIs, which makes it possible for broadcasters to integrate long distance transmission into their production workflows.

Because bookings are made with time-based consumption and pricing, customers avoid paying for dedicated capacity. Given the traffic from a typical sports venue, hosting perhaps two to three events a week, and using gigabits of capacity for just a few hours each time, it is easy to see the advantages of a more dynamic capacity. Satellite like pricing models with fixed network characteristics such as high quality, high capacity and low latency is a combination that is hard to beat. With a system that keeps track of all resources and attaches financial value to them, the ability to establish competitive pricing is considerable. Quality, bandwidth, service level agreements, source and destination locations as well as network routes are all parameters that can be used to create innovative pricing.

Today a customer typically gets a number of dedicated ports tied to their own virtual network. A customer provisioned network enables new service offerings, where customers can share ports and book them on a first-come, first-served basis. This opens up for new market offerings based on both dedicated and shared resources, enabling new revenue streams.

Furthermore our customer and application provisioned network solution automates the entire order-to-bill process, including fulfillment, assurance and billing. The need for manual ordering handling and provisioning is gone, which means that the service is up and running and generates revenue immediately after it has been ordered. No more paperwork and no more months of lead time to get network connectivity. Depending on the size of the network, the OPEX savings provided by automation can also be significant.

Finally awareness of bookings in the future gives service providers a tool to accurately forecasts future capacity needs. This view into the future can also be used for scheduling maintenance windows. Resources such as links or nodes can be made unavailable in advance, and services booked during that window can be made available on alternative paths.
