Demonstrations at NAB

At the NAB Show, we showcased various demonstrations of our media IP gateway solutions for remote production, occasional use flexibility, cloud production, sports contribution, and Lumen cloud distribution. These solutions offer benefits such as low latency, high quality, flexibility, scalability, and efficient operation, with features like support for multiple codecs, SDI to 2110 adaptation, end-to-end network service control, active protection, and edge-to-edge monitoring.

Read all about our showcase at the show this year.

Media IP Gateways

The recent demonstration at this year’s NAB Show in Las Vegas of Net insight’s Media IP Gateways highlights our flexibility for remote production by supporting multiple codecs. Specifically, with the use of Nimbra MSR platform, which showcased its ability to support JPEGXS with a latency of 2.5 ms, which is compared to an uncompressed video feed with a latency of 1 ms, as well as other codecs such as JPEG2000 and MPEG4.

This flexibility is particularly well-suited for remote production and sports events, allowing for a reconfiguration of the system depending on the needs of the event.

The main focus of the demonstration was to showcase the latency performance of the Nimbra MSR platform, rather than the quality of the video feed. The platform’s unique performance allows for the compression, transmission, and decompression of live video feeds using the JPEGXS codec, with a latency that is comparable to an uncompressed feed.

This means that the platform can provide an extremely low latency video feed, which is essential for real-time applications such as remote production and live sports events.

JPEG XS Ground-to-cloud production

This demonstration showcases a solution for a Tier 1 event organizer who occasionally hosts large events with short durations of less than a month. The challenge is to meet the increasing content needs while dealing with budget constraints and difficulties in catering for production resources at arena sites that still use legacy SDI standards.

The proposed solution involves using Nimbra 1060 on the ground at the event with JPEG XS encoding for the best quality and lowest latency. TR-07 transport is used to address the sync challenge in the cloud, and SDI to 2110 adaptation is included. The production and adaptation take place in the cloud, and the production outputs are ready for cloud distribution with Nimbra Edge.

The benefits of the solution include the best available codec provided by Comprimato, and extremely low latency, cloud production and manipulation, the ability to spin up resources, and the flexibility to route content to anywhere in the world with just a few clicks.

Occasional Use (OU) flexibility

The demonstration showcased a solution for a Tier 1 production company looking to standardize equipment for all productions. The solution proposed the use of Nimbra 680 equipment in one rack, with encoding licenses variable on a monthly basis, support for JPEG XS, JPEG 2000, and MPEG-4 on the same board, and support for 1+1, 2022-7, FEC, dynamic reroute, source protection, and on-demand.

The solution also included low-latency encoding for the best quality and lowest latency, SDI to 2110 adaptation, and Nimbra 688 at a central location supporting three events in parallel. The benefits of the solution include a low investment in hardware, a subscription for encoding and protection features depending on the event, and no unused gear, resulting in a clear OPEX per event.

IP Media Trust Boundary

The IP Media Trust Boundary was showcased at NAB as a solution to protect the Global Media Network core that carries all media traffic, with a standardized way of connecting customer sites and a complete set of protective measures. The solution proposed using Aperi with a Trust Boundary feature, API integration to management solutions, the same equipment regardless of end customer specific requirements, and standardized procedures.

The benefits of the solution include less outage time in the GMN network due to mistakes, no cuts or affect when managing FW/NAT, quicker fault isolation, and lower OPEX due to management integration.

Control across various networks

The demonstration showcased at the NAB Show involves a solution for customers who use a majority of transport services from Net Insight, use third-party encoders/decoders, and plan to move more towards the cloud.

The solution proposed is the integration of Skyline’s DataMiner towards the full Net Insight product suite and third-party products with a unified secured interface, end-to-end network service control across managed/unmanaged networks, and a single control layer for the full workflow.

The benefits of the solution include an integrated workflow where all services can be managed through a single user interface, operational benefits with faster processes to implement new services in a diverse product environment, and the ability to monitor and manage the whole network from one place, achieving a more efficient and optimized operation while saving time and money and keeping the highest quality of service 24/7.

Cloud production

This demonstration showcased at this year’s NAB is a cloud production solution for a Tier 1 Production Service Provider who needs to extend an existing managed video service platform, MIMiC, while maintaining good quality and latency, and a robust architecture suitable for live events.

The proposed solution involves using internet delivery, integrating with a managed network, wide ARQ format support, end-to-end active protection, integrating edge appliances such as Nimbra 414 and Matrox Monarch Edge, and providing metrics and monitoring from the appliance to handoff.

The benefits of the solution include the ability for The Switch to extend their market and reach Tier 2 events with an ‘Off Net’ opportunity, a usage-based model that can grow with the business, an enhanced Tier 1 offer with DR/Backup, and enhanced quality.

Sports contribution

The sports contribution demonstration showcased at the NAB Show involves a solution for customers who need a robust and flexible network to distribute event feeds to multiple geo-diverse takers and rights holders, with sync delivery regardless of location, the ability to extend the network beyond managed infrastructure, and the ability to have takers self-manage stream selection, with monitoring to the point of handoff.

The proposed solution involves using internet delivery with a multi-tenant UI, wide ARQ format support, configurable for differing destination needs, end-to-end active protection, a Nimbra 414 edge appliance interface, providing metrics and monitoring from the appliance/handoff, and deterministic sync delay for all destinations.

The benefits of the solution include a self-service portal for all takers to cut down operational overhead and reduce platform costs, a usage-based model that makes event-based usage very commercially efficient, and OPEX saving in using unmanaged internet delivery rather than capacity on managed networks.

CBS Sports – Cloud Production to OTT

Lumen Cloud distribution

The Lumen showcase demonstrated at this year’s NAB Show is a solution for sports distribution, with 100 channels at a large scale, MPLS fiber network source, and internet OTT destinations, requiring a highly robust solution with edge-to-edge monitoring and demark control.

The proposed solution involves using Nimbra 414, MPLS gateway devices, RTP FEC input, RIST secure output, Nimbra Edge for core orchestration and monitoring, multi-region end-to-end protection, and Edge Connect destination demark.

The benefits of the solution include extending Lumen network reach beyond the existing owned infrastructure, exploring new opportunities while maintaining the quality of service expected, and increasing quality/reporting to end customers with edge-to-edge monitoring to the CDN handoff.
