Powering the expansion of a Global Media Network
As a leader in the transmission of live sports, entertainment and news broadcasts, Hibernia upgraded its Net Insight network to support the demand for new video services such as JPEG2K and IP. Additionally, Net Insight assisted Hibernia with the integration of an extensive new European video network creating one of the largest Net Insight Nimbra video networks in the world.
Founded in early 2008, Hibernia Networks (fka Hibernia Media), provides high quality transport and managed network services for the production and broadcast industries. Hibernia Networks specializes in transporting flawless digital and high definition (HD) content in its native formats as demanded by sports, TV and film production, news, mobile and IPTV. The company is focused on providing network solutions that handle uncompressed or lossless compression HD signals so programmers and broadcasters can deliver higher quality content more economically.
While the media industry is adopting new compression formats such as MPEG-4, JPEG2000 or moving to low bit rate IP transmission, it is still using legacy, uncompressed formats as well. Hibernia Networks effortlessly bridges its customers’ current operations with the demands of emerging new technologies.
In today’s multidimensional broadcast environment, Hibernia Networks looked to Net Insight to help it expand and upgrade its video network platform.
The team at Hibernia Networks consists of seasoned industry veterans whose experience enabled them to quickly recognize customer needs based on market demands. They turned to Net Insight’s unique media transport products.
Hibernia Networks chose Net Insight’s Nimbra 600 platform to carry real-time traffic for professional media companies across the US and Europe. With this technology, Hibernia’s network delivers high capacity transmission capabilities for uncompressed and compressed HD or SD video and data services. All Net Insight technology is backwards-compatible,allowing Hibernia Networks to layer new Nimbra platforms onto the existing Nimbra 600 switches to accommodate future needs. The Nimbra 600 switches can be coupled with the Nimbra 300 series of multiservice edge and access switches. From a transport and management point of view, this provides operators with additional network switching options to meet unique needs.
Most importantly, the Nimbra platform achieves 97 percent bandwidth utilization and 100 percent quality of service. This platform allows Hibernia Networks to provide its customers with the highest quality services to meet their video production demands.
Hibernia Networks signed an updated support contract with Net Insight in early 2013 and jointly completed the integration of 90 Nimbra nodes in Europe with Hibernia’s existing global media network – while simultaneously enabling JPEG2K and IP transport across two continents.
In 2012 Hibernia Networks acquired TeliaSonera International Carrier’s MediaConnect business, which effectively doubled Hibernia’s media network and created one of the largest 100% QoS video networks in the world. Hibernia Networks now has over 200 Nimbra nodes at TV, cable, satellite, studios and sports venues. The acquisition expanded Hibernia Networks’ European footprint, which already included London, Dublin and Brussels, into new markets such as Amsterdam, Berlin,Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Helsinki, Madrid, Munich, Oslo, Paris, Riga, Stockholm, Tallinn, Vienna and Vilnius.
Net Insight’s JPEG2000 video compression solution enables Hibernia Network’s customers to pursue more efficient ways to backhaul high-quality contribution content. Hibernia are also utilizing Net Insight’s Gigabit Ethernet over HD-SDI Intelligent SFPs for live events using integration into existing interfaces and thereby leveraging local HD-SDI loops for multi-service delivery with guaranteed QoS.
Some of the high-profile live events that Hibernia Networks have supported include the FIFA World Cup, Academy Awards, Grammy Awards, NCAA Basketball Championships, and the recent American political conventions.During the 2012 Olympiad in London, as well as during the 2013 Winter X Games, the company facilitated remote production with diverse, direct feeds back to its customers’ headquarters, reducing the need for on-site staff and gear, thereby saving costs.
Hibernia Networks now offers simplified global reach to key cities throughout North America, UK, Europe, Latin America and Asia on over 24,000 kilometers of high capacity fiber. The network is managed from Hibernia Network’s 24/7 world-class Television Operations Center ( TOC) in Baltimore, MD.
“Hibernia Networks is extremely selective in what technology we use in our network, Net Insight delivered the networking flexibility and reliability we needed.” Daniel Diep, Director of Network Architecture, Hibernia Networks.
