Chyron and Net Insight introduces End-to-End Solution for Continent-Reach Digital Production Networks

13 September, 2002
Stand 3.141 and 10.115, IBC, Amsterdam - 13th September 2002: – Chyron Corporation (OTC BB: CYRO), the leading provider of broadcast transmission solutions and Net Insight, a leading provider of real-time broadband infrastructure technology for the broadcast industry, demonstrates an integration of wide area video infrastructure and Chyron’s studio switching control system.
The end-to-end solution being launched at IBC 2002, integrates distant video sources into the local switching control system. The solution makes external video feeds a natural part of the local studio environment.

Included in the end-to-end solution are Chyron’s Aurora switching control system and Net Insight’s multi-service network platform. The integrated system enables producers to manage all video sources, local or distant, with the ease of a single-button operation.

With automatic provisioning of SDI, ASI and IP transport links on demand, broadcasters can enjoy the same level of connectivity to remote production sites as if they were placed in the same building.

“This continues our strategy of being a leader in contribution and content management for the broadcasting industry”, commented Neil Maycock, Director of Engineering, Chyron Corporation Pro-Bel Division. Adding, “The combined experience of both companies - media production and telecommunication – brings to the industry an unrivalled partnership and solution.”

Chyron’s Aurora provides comprehensive control via ‘soft’ and hard panels, together with multi-matrix and multi-level routing capabilities. Aurora’s advanced tie-line management logic is mapped on the DTM network to manage the network infrastructure in conjunction with the crosspoint routers allowing routes to be made from a source at one location to a destination at another in one, simple operator selection. This will allow wide area networking to be integrated into existing installations utilizing current, familiar user interfaces and will provide the broadcaster with unprecedented flexibility for signal distribution of the local and wide area networks.

As Tomas Duffy, CEO, Net Insight explained, “Together with Chyron, we are able to offer an integrated solution for studio and studio-to-studio video networks - cutting costs significantly and simplifying production. Video transport over fibre networks is about to revolutionise TV production in the same manner as the Internet changed the way we do traditional business.

More about Net Insight’s network solution
Based on the standardized DTM protocol (Dynamic synchronous Transfer Mode), inherently a circuit-switched technology, the solution guarantees real-time delivery of all types of video, audio and data with strict 100 % QoS. The transport is secured independent of network load or network size.

- Standard media interfaces: Net Insight’s multi-service network platform offers industry standard SDI, ASI and IP interface. This eliminates the need to adapt to telecom network standards with converters or advanced compression schemes.

- Automatic provisioning of network links: Net Insight’s solution includes in-band signalling for establishing the service connections in the network. This enables for a true end-to-end service provisioning over the network.

- Multi-service: Transported in separate channels, uncompressed 270 Mbps video over SDI one or several streams of MPEG video over ASI-DVB, and IP/Ethernet services can all be transported through the same network. All interfaces can be installed into one access unit.

- Optimal network utilization: The granular characteristics of the solution make it possible to match the access bandwidth to virtually any video bit rate. Dividing the network capacity into channel segments of 0,5 Mbps, the protocol supports single-operation provisioning of bandwidth from 0,5 Mbps up to line speed.

- Multicast: The solution includes full multicast functionality to secure optimal use of network resources. With SDI, ASI and Ethernet multicast, broadcasters can transport all types of video from one source to multiple recipients in the most cost-efficient manner.

- Redundancy: The DTM technology offers several alternatives for protection switching to meet the high demands of broadcasters. Operators can design the network to offer any level of protection from network redundancy with rerouting to complete 1+1 (hot standby) with dual equipment end-to-end.

- Integrates with legacy networks: To secure a smooth transition between the telecom world and the media industry, Net Insight’s platform is designed to integrate with and make the most of legacy infrastructure. Offering trunk modules with interface for STM-1, 4 and 16 (OC-3, 12 and 48), Net Insight’s platform can operate on top of existing SDH/SONET networks, adding the full functionality of DTM. The DTM protocol introduces a flexible service layer that allows operators to offer on-demand IP and video services while keeping their current business intact.

- Directly on fibre: Where available, the solution can also be installed directly on dark fibre.
